I would say the biggest achievement of all was the athletic edge, the struggle for victory, the sporting atmosphere, and the drive that everyone — the athletes, the honoured guests and the spectators — all felt.
XI International swimming competition Vladimir Salnikov Cup has closed in St. Petersburg today. Anton Kolesnikov showed the best result among men and was awarded silver shark Grand Prix of the competition. The other Grand Prix went to Veronika Andrusenko from St. Petersburg who was the best among women.
During the closing ceremony, Vladimir Salnikov summarized, ‘I am very glad that our competition is marked by such great results, several records’. Yesterday Kliment Kolesnikov set a new world record at 100 m backstroke. By the way, it is the first individual record set during 11 years of traditional Salnikov Cup. For the third time in a row Veronika Andrusenko won at 200m freestyle and for the third time she set a new record of Vladimir Salnikov Cup. Kirill Prigoda set another record of the competition at 50m breaststroke. On the second day Kliment Kolesnikov set a new world record at 200m freestyle among juniors.

Alongside with high results of the sportsmen, XI Vladimir Salnikov Cup distinguished itself with full stands (about one thousand people visited the competition), incredible support for swimmers in every heat, bright closing ceremony with life performance by the singer of the Voice Russia Olga Abdulina and aerial gymnasts, who demonstrated their mastery just under the ceiling of the sports center without any safety equipment.
FINA has recognized 2017 Vladimir Salnikov Cup as a preliminary of 2018 World Short Course Swimming Championship. The Cup is included in LEN (European Swimming League) calendar as an international event of the highest level. It is supported by the Government of St. Petersburg, the All-Russian Swimming Federation, the St. Petersburg Swimming Federation. Additional financing comes at the expense of attracted sponsorship funds. The next, XII Vladimir Salnikov Cup, will traditionally take place in St. Petersburg in December 2018.
