A new world record was set in St. Petersburg

However, the pleasant sensation for Russian spectators, was somewhat prepared. After the record heat  Kliment said he hoped for the world record when he was going for his first Vladimir Sulnikov Cup. The swimmer is in great shape. He has recently proved it during European Short Course Swimming Championship in Copenhagen. Today he has made a great New Year present to all Russian swimming and the whole country.

During the opening ceremony Vladimir Salnikov dedicated XI tournament to the Russian coaches – present, former, and those, who are not with us today – who worked hard and raised our champions.

On the first day of Vladimir Salnikov Cup sportsmen competed for 16 sets of medals. The gold winners of the day: Kliment Kolesnikov (100m  freestyle and 100m backstroke), Kirill Prigoda (50m breaststroke with  a new record of Vladimir Salnikov Cup and 200 m breaststroke), Veronika Andrusenko (200 m freestyle), Natalya Ivaneeva (100m breaststroke), Maksim Stupin (200m medley), Alexandra Sabitova (100m butterfly), Anastasiya Fesikova (50 m backstroke), Alexander Kharlamov (200m butterfly), Alexander Krasnyh (400 m freestyle), Kim Bush (50m freestyle), Anastasiya Kirpichnikova (800m freestyle), Anastasiya Avdeeva (200m backstroke), Oleg Kostin (50m butterfly) and St. Petersburg team (4 х100m freestyle mixed relay).

The second day of the competition will take place in St. Petersburg Swimming Centre (10, ul. Khlopina) tomorrow.  The program of the competition includes preliminaries (start at 9:30 a.m.) and finals, during which sportsmen will compete for 16 sets of medals. The finals start at 4 p.m. The closing ceremony of  XI Vladimir Salnikov Cup starts at 6:30 p.m.  The best sportsmen among men and women who reach the highest FINA points will be awarded Grand Prix of the competition, shark-shaped prizes. And to beat the first day’s leader Kliment Kolesnikov, competitors probably have to set another world record. As a result of the first day, the leader among women is Veronika Andrusenko, member of St. Petersburg team.

Vladimir Salnikov Cup is included in LEN (European Swimming League) calendar as an international event of the highest level. The Competition is supported by the Government of St. Petersburg, the All-Russian Swimming Federation, the St. Petersburg Swimming Federation. Additional financing comes at the expense of attracted sponsorship funds. This year FINA has recognized Vladimir Salnikov Cup as a preliminary of 2018 World Short Course Swimming Championship.
