The VIII International swimming competition the Vladimir Salnikov Cup will be held in St. Petersburg on the 19th and 20th of December.
For the first time, the total prize fund will amount to more than four million rubles.
The international swimming tournament has been gathering the strongest swimmers of Russia and the world in the city on the Neva for eight years - 300 participants, among them, world and European champions, winners of the Olympic Games, World Championships and other prestigious competitions in this sport.
This year, the Vladimir Salnikov Cup will be held on 19 and 20 December, in the Swimming Centre on Hlopina street. The tournament is open to athletes who have qualified as "masters of sport". 250 participants have been invited by the Organizing Committee and are the strongest in the current rating. The only exception is the additional opportunity for masters of sport from St.-Petersburg and the Leningrad region: the city has an additional quota because it is one of the organizers of the competition. The Vladimir Salnikov Cup is included in the LEN calendar, and for many years has been considered one of the major European tournaments taking place in Russia.
The program will remain unchanged: 36 sets of medals will be awarded, including the Vladimir Salnikov "Star" - 1500 m freestyle. Also a mixed relay will remeain in the program, which for the third year will delight the audience and provide a rare opportunity to see the rivalry between Russian and international teams made up of the best swimmers of Russia and the world.
A star cast of Russians composed of the winners and champions of world and continental championships as well as Olympic medalists: Yevgeny Korotyshkin, Vladimir Morozov, Danila Izotov, Nikita Lobintsev, Yevgeny Sedov Andrey Suhorukov, Oleg Tihobaev, Kirill Prihoda and Veronika Popova. Also in St. Petersburg will be the Olympic champions and winners of world and continental Championships: Katinka Hosszu, brother and sister, Evelin and David Verraszto (Hungary), Sebastiaan Verschuren, Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Inge Dekker, Frederike Heemshkerk (the Netherlands), Aleksandra Gerasimenya (Belarus).
It has become a fine tradition that delagations from swimming federations from CIS countries and neighbouring states also take part in the tournament. This year athletes from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Armenia and Latvia have come for the Salnikov Cup
2014 brings participants new opportunities: for the first time the prize fund of the tournament has risen to 4 million rubles, and the winners on aggregate points - one male and one female, in addition to the prize money, will receive the main cup of the competition - the unique "shark".
Entrance for spectators is free of charge. The morning heats begin at 10.00, the finals begin at 16.30. 19 December at 16.30 the tournament opens with a traditional sport show The bright and spectacular awards ceremony will be held on 20 December at 18.30.
